The year is 2010 and an elite hacker has risen. While a subtle plot slowly emerges, the hacker goes to a Bulletin Board to receive jobs. That hacker is you.
Jobs received from the Bulletin Board range from minor tasks like stealing/destroying research files to hacking heavily defended banks for extra Credits. With the Credits gained after accomplishment of each mission, you can buy software upgrades as well as increase the power of your system.
As soon as you start the game, you become a registered Uplink Agent. You can choose to situate your computer gateway at any one of the major cities given on the World Map. You start at Grade 32 and must work your way to the top (Grade 1). You take missions in order to earn Credit to buy hacker tools and gain the rating required for even harder missions. As you successfully complete missions, your Agent rating increases and for every mission you abort, your rating goes down. There will be missions on the Bulletin Board that are only available to Uplink Agents of a higher grade, and there will sometimes be upgrades you need to have in order to do a certain mission. Of course, more difficult missions pay more Credits, so it is worth working for a higher Agent rating.
You can hack and destroy almost every machine and even affect the Stock Market by taking down a company's system and rendering their services useless. There will be missions where you are required to compromise government computers to delete someone else' criminal records, or change their university degree. But you must not forget to clean your traces afterwards, or you'll find the authorities after you.
You don't need a 3D card or a powerful processor to be able to run this game; it will run smoothly on even a Pentium 2. That said, Uplink's graphics are no match for the likes of Neverwinter Nights or Grand Theft Auto Vice City, but Uplink is a game with a difference ? the game resolution does not affect gameplay. You only really need your mouse in this game, but occasionally you will need the keyboard for typing in passwords, commands and so on. Uplink?s minimum system requirements are: Pentium PC, 32MB RAM, a relatively recent video card (doesn?t need to be a 3D), Windows 95 or better (this game is even available for Linux), working sound card, 4xCD-ROM drive. If you have problems meeting the minimum requirements... well? I won?t say anything here.
Uplink's theme, by default, is navy blue with white text, but you can download skins from the official Uplink website or fan sites to change the colour to red or green.
Uplink is an absorbing, tense, and highly realistic game. For many hours while my family sleeps, I have found myself anxiously immersed in Uplink, staring at the screen and listening to the gradually faster beeps of my trace tracker and frantically clearing my logs before the authorities terminate my connection. However, with the addictiveness aside, Uplink can also be painfully repetitive, as once you have worked out how to solve a particular problem, it becomes considerably easier the next time and there's the fairly obvious 'cheat' to back up your saved game files, making the game considerably easier. And the annoying thing is, if you are unfortunately caught and imprisoned, there is no way to get yourself out of jail, you have to start from the beginning unless you have backed up your save games.
Contrary to popular beliefs, Uplink does have a plot in its 12 major (and countless minor) missions (but I won't spoil the game for you by listing all of them and their solutions), 2 of which are deosebit missions - The Mole and Wargame. The major missions influence the outcome of the game while the minor missions give you the status and Credit necessary to become a recognised elite Agent.
The music in Uplink adds to the tense atmosphere, making the game more playable and addictive. Although there are different tunes, they repeat themselves over and over. I personally dislike the tune where this voice says 'welcome to the world of reality' as I think it has no relevance to the game, but I turn my speakers off when that comes on to prevent irritation.
Uplink's longevity depends how you play the game. If you only wanted to become a Grade 1 Agent, you would spend as long as it takes to get there. The same goes for if you wanted maximum Credit and all equipment. If you wanted to fully complete the game (i.e. complete every single mission, have all equipment and reach Grade 1), you will find yourself re-playing the game time after time to discover its hidden secrets (these include missions and computer systems that are not listed on InterNIC - an in-game computer directory that lists all known systems in the game).
Although there are no scroll bars in the game by default, you could download the patch from Introversion's website (www.introversion.co.uk) which adds scroll bars (these save you from endless clicking in order to get to the bottom/top of a long list) along with extra features like connecting to computers on your Local Area Network, chatting to fellow gamers via IRC (Internet Relay Chat), more available software and many more (see their website for the changes list). They should also vary the missions as well as the rewards so that Uplink is not entirely "hack into a system, do your stuff, delete traces and get paid Credits". There should also be special tools that you can get by successfully accomplishing certain missions to increase the game's replay factor.
When playing, rest assured that this is just a game and there is no need to check whether your modem's plugged in or whether there's a knock on your door and a voice telling you to come out with your hands up. To this extent, Uplink can be too realistic because everything you do in the game are just like what a typical hacker would, but this realism adds to the tense atmosphere of the game and increases its playability.
Admittedly, Uplink is not for everyone. Those who have very little knowledge of computers will have a difficult time to start with, because although you do not need to know how computers and networks work inside out, IP addresses are constantly involved in the game. To simplify things a little, IP numbers are like telephone numbers you dial and in the game every computer has a unique IP address. But if you really become stuck, you can go to the "Other Sites" link on Introversion's website to go to Uplink fan sites (www.modlink.net is a good one), where you will find detailed guides as well as extra skins for the game, but be warned, most of the guides will contain spoilers. |
